The Verb Project is a site responsive project at Blank Media Collective’s Blank Space on the southern outskirts of Manchester City Centre by artists Kate Freeborough and Kathryn Miller. On Saturday 26th January 2013, they hosted an artists’ networking event, In-Between, with a large percentage of the day given over to free collaboration in response to the space. Always interested in getting to work with other artists, I was pleased to be invited and saw it as a great opportunity to put the Placemaking Boards to new use. I initially photographed my own response to document the space itself (photos to the right) but the boards were later used to record the aspirations and perceived achievements of the other collaborators.
In addition, we utilised Kathryn’s darkroom set up to make a couple of photograms with a drawing she had ‘traced’ from outside the building on to a This Place Is board and one of Kate’s claiming the space for The Verb Project with a This Belongs To. Though I was aware of the potential for using them to cast shadows in spaces, it had never occurred to me that they could make interesting photograms so this was an unexpected and exciting tangent which brilliantly rounded off a very enjoyable day of collaborative experimentation!
