A Buddhist Lament
And so the cycle turning,
The wheel of life goes round,
Before it can be lost
It must have once been found.
From taking the not given
I undertake to abstain;
Open handed generosity
Shall be my heart’s refrain.
May my sacrifice be given,
For another’s benefit
May others reap the harvest
Of my deficit.
To give and to do good
Is truly all that I would like;
So why am I so peeved
That someone’s pinched my bike!?
