Underneath Your Shadow
On the far side of a shadow
Just the thickness of a sigh
You're lying in your cold bed
And I fail to sleep in mine.
And then I wonder when my spark went,
Was it when your flame blew out?
When I slipped underneath your shadow
And you left me with no doubt?
Now I hear dawn lit birdsong
As a new day takes to flight
But I'm still trapped beneath your shadow,
My eyes shut against the light.
I know I'll keep on getting up
Some how, when I've awoken
But the night rolls on forever
And the morning's always broken.
On the far side of a shadow
Just the thickness of a sigh.
The distance that divides us
No more than shuts the eye.
