CRITgroup was started in 2011 by graduates from MIRIAD (Manchester Institute for Research and Innovation in Art and Design) at Manchester Metropolitan University and ran until mid 2015. It was a networking and discussion group open to creative practitioners with any level of experience or at any stage in their career.
It aimed to facilitate an informal opportunity for those working in a broad range of disciplines to meet, share and discuss their practical work as well as issues impacting on their practices, be those professional or otherwise. While exchange and dialogue was encouraged, those who wished to attend but did not necessarily have an active practice were also very welcome.
Those who came and went from the group shared work ranging from Sculpture, Jewellery, Photography, 3D Design, Textiles, Book Art, Ceramics, Installation, Painting, Community Projects, Illustration, Tattooing, Curation, Social Practices, Printmaking and Graphic Design. As well as discussing practical work, the group enjoyed welcoming a range of visiting speakers and also engaged in collaborative projects, workshops and a show of work, all of which provided a basis for research and discussion. Often this focused on the differences between disciplines, especially those coming from an 'arts' or 'crafts' background.
CRITgroup continued to meet for some time after these events, however following some reflection on the evolving needs of the group and a noticeable decline in numbers as various practices grew in different directions, it was decided to take a different approach with less regular meetings and a range of informal alternative events such as gallery visits. When it became clear that this 'lighter touch' had not stimulated a renewed level of attendance or utilisation of the resource, it was happily declared that CRITgroup had served it's purpose and could now be put to pasture. Group members continue to interact, albeit more remotely, and we can be contacted through the contact form below, should you wish to get in touch.
Throughout the life of CRITgroup, the session content was recorded on the group CRITblog and these can still be accessed and reviewed. Particular highlights also include the Creative Whispers and Crafting by Committee projects, which are linked below:
