Earth Heart Kitchen, Garden and Crafts at Llanfyllin Food Fair

It's been another busy month here at the newly incorporated Earth Heart Limited and we've been engaged in all sorts of the less fun bits of starting a small business, from registering with Companies House to employing an accountant, opening a business account and even setting up a card reader to receive payments! Mildly anxious email monitoring in anticipation of feedback from our pre-planning application for the Earth Heart glamp site has also been a feature of recent weeks...

Surely it can't be long now?!

It was a joy to see some familiar faces (would you belive we seem to have regular customers now!?) and exciting to make some new contacts too. We had a full range of sweet treats, fresh garden produce and handmade crafts with us, all of which enjoyed some sales; Nik even considered going home for more courgettes, chard, leeks and beetroot at one point, all of which totally sold out! So too the peanut butter cookies and raisin loaves though the carrot cake and apple and raspberry flapjacks were also top sellers. I don't tend to leave poetry books in the honesty box as they're just too vulnerable to damp and dust so it was particularly lovely to sell some copies of Heart Space too, and I may have to get the glass paints out again to replenish the crafts stock before long.

I was so genuinely impressed with and grateful to everyone who came along on such a wet and muddy day, it's a real credit to the reputation of the event, now in its 7th year. I was as surprised at how quickly the soggy hours flew by as I was by the determined support of our customers, and can only imagine we'd have sold out by lunchtime had the sun been shining!

Still, we've been keeping in touch with the creative vision and since my first pop up bakery at Dragons last month, we've been gently delighted by the trickle of interest in the honesty box whilst our cockles have been well and truly warmed by some very lovely interactions at the roadside with passers by who've stopped to browse and buy from our selection of vegan baking, organic veggies and upcycled crafts. In terms of footfall though, you really can't beat an organised event and last weekend we attended our first food fair! Held at the Workhouse in Llanfyllin, the frustratingly timed (very) rainy day failed to deter a variety of stall holders, artists in open studios, musicians and intrepid members of public alike from showing up as planned and making a day of it none the less!

I'll be back at the (wonderfully dry!) Dragons in Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant next Saturday for another day of bakery pop up alongside the usual variety of local crafts and you can still find the Earth Heart honesty box, just 1 mile from the same village on the road to Penybontfawr. We've started to open most Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, come rain or shine, at least for the time being! However, I'm hoping my next update will be good news from the Powys County Council planning office, so please cross your fingers... and watch this space!

The Myth of the Solstice at Summer

Happy Summer Solstice!

It might seem that the summer has barely got going this year but the longest day and shortest night of the northern hemisphere is upon us! Well, as of 21:50 today that is! May any celebrations you're having be joyous and merry! We were planning to have a mini camping break in Cornwall for the occasion but a confluence of unforeseen family responsibility, an unexpectedly drawn out kitchen deep clean (more on that soon!) and a lack of enthusiasm for a 6 hour drive on top of that led us to review our options... And slightly kick ourselves for not already having thought to 'glamp' on the soon to be Earth Heart yurt space! So here we are enjoying a holiday at home; and how delightfully convenient it is!! But whatever you happen to be up to, here's a little trilogy of poems from my collection 'Seventeen Myths for the Solstice at Summer' to help you mark the occasion!

With love xx

Back to the Open Mic!

One of my favourite posts of last month was in recounting our lovely evening at the Cross Keys, Llanfyllin for the open mic night, where we'd enjoyed sharing our own musical and poetic offerings, as well as soaking up all the other talent. A month rolls round fast these days and we were there again last night for more live arts; It was every bit as good and didn't disappoint!
Annabeth and Nik

I read a few poems, one for the coming summer solstice, a rather more political one in (dis)respect of the coming election, and a piece from my collection
Heart Space. Nik wowed the room again with an abridged arrangement of a late night raag (well, 9pm feels quite late sometimes) and we shared our latest meander into merging sitar with a Pali chant, wishing all beings be well and happy.

We've popped a recording of a version of that online
here, so you can check it out at your leisure!

That two of my friends from the community at Taraloka also made the impressive effort to drive an hour from Bettisfield to join us was big part of the joy of last night for me and it was totally lovely to hear Natalia's songs and Clair's poems. Natalia is a trained singer with a professional operatic background, though she was occupying a more folky territory last night with guitar in hand. I was delighted when she played my favourite of her repertoire (so far) a ballad she wrote after a dream about the relationship between a human girl and a mythical race of wild, one eyed horses!
Clair has a very different style of performance but held the room none the less rapt with her softly spoken poems of such delicate observational detail that we were all inspired to fall in love with the beauty of the leopard slug in a midnight kitchen and transported to curl up gently into the ruby depths of a hollow raspberry.
Of course, there was the usual mix of other, equally impressive talent and we were also treated to acapella harmonies, ukulele, banjo and spoken word. We even had an interactive sea shanty sing song at one point that had the whole room going! We're getting closer and closer to properly launching the whole Earth Heart project (think glamping meets community arts as a quick summary) and I couldn't help but gaze round the room of so many accomplished local performers and imaginatively gather them all in a cosy yurt for even more sessions of sharing and collaboration. More about all that soon though; the future holds so much potential but last night was another beautiful evening of skill, joy, connection, friendship and expression very much in the bag. It doesn't get much better than that!

How To Find Beauty

4/6/2024

I recently reflected on and described myself as having a 'practice of beauty'. Further to that, I began planning to share a short guided meditation but it seems I accidentally wrote a poem instead. Of course, you could use it as a meditation, just like any poem, really. I still plan to record and share a short guided meditation on beauty, but I haven't done it yet.

Here's the poem in the meantime...

How To Find Beauty

If you would seek beauty,
First, you must
If at all possible
Take yourself to a place
Where you can see
The natural world
Unfolding.
A park would do,
At a push.
A woodland
Maybe better.
Or if you are in a city street
Simply become aware of weeds.
A crack in any pavement,
Often lets life try.
Then, become embodied
(As much as you can)
Noticing the rise and fall
Of breath.
The rhythm of your steps,
Perhaps.
Sensations in your feet.
Or maybe just inhabit
For a time
The point at which
Your edges
Feel less true.
Open your eyes.
(the inner ones will do.)
And see what you can see
Even with your eyelids folded.
A flush of colour.
A play of light.
Fresh, new growth
Or a sparkle drop of rain.
The way a sun beam
Kisses you with warmth
And asks for nothing back.
Whatever it is,
Let it flood through you,
Wash you away
And forget everything
That is not beautiful.
This is how to seek for beauty.

But
When a passing car,
Unpleasant noise,
Unwelcome thought
Or rotten smell
Threatens to pillage
All that you have built
In your experience;
Rejoice.
It is really there you find her.
The spirit of beauty.
In taking her leave,
Oft betrays her presence.
Now you must
Attend to your grief
As if it were your only child.
And know you know
She still resides in you.

Poetry Night for Tiratanaloka

2/6/2024

Last night I had the great pleasure of cohosting a poetry night to raise funds for the Tiratanaloka [Un]limited project! Tiratanaloka is the main women's ordination training retreat centre for the Triratna Buddhist movement, and they are fundraising so they can move from their current site to a bigger property.
Picture
They say 'right now dozens are waiting for a space on each retreat, and with over 1000 on our database, many more would come if we could host them.' I've attended several retreats at Tiratanaloka over the last 7 years and I can testify that the lack of space is not owing to any expectations of luxury; they sure are packing the bums onto the meditation cushions! I actually gave up trying to eat meals in the dining room because I just found it far too cramped and last time I visited I decided to camp instead of take a shared bedroom so I could have a bit more space. It's not even possible to fit everyone in the shrine room for some of the meditation practices so they really do need to move. When the team announced that they were looking for a new home, I was delighted to hear it and wanted to give financial support but being on low income, the best I could do was try a spot of fundraising myself!
Fast forward a good 18 months or more to a beautiful early summer evening, and 13 of us (lucky for some; I think I counted right!) gathered together at the Shrewsbury Buddhist Centre to share our own writing, or poems by others that have inspired or moved us, in aid of Tiratanaloka.

I had been a little worried about numbers as I'd accidently arranged the evening (back in January, I hasten to add) to clash with a much bigger fundraising weekend for the same project, hosted at Taraloka, another Triratna retreat centre for women (where I lived for 6 years!). I needn't have worried; it seemed to me that we had just the right amount of time for myself and my cohost Bethany to each share a few of our pieces with plenty of room for everyone else who wanted to read too. We even fitted in a tea break! Our generous poets (and highly valued audience members!) kindly gave a total of £130 for Tiratanaloka, and several people asked if we'd run another poetry night soon, which I'm pretty sure will happen in the not too distant future.
It was a truly lovely evening and very moving at times to hear such a depth and range of human experience being shared with the kind of raw authenticity that I've only ever encountered at smaller, more intimate events. It was also an exciting opportunity for me to debut a collection of poems that I'd actually written whilst on retreat at Tiratanaloka last year. Titled Seventeen Myths for the Solstice at Summer, the seasonally appropriate collection poured itself out during a four day period of silence, which happened to coincide with the summer solstice. Seven of the 'myths' were in fact illustrations but the ten poems presented themselves as a little journey, which I shared in their entirety, including an experimental bridging between verse with my sansula. The transporting and otherworldly sound of the thumb piano-cum-tiny frame drum was so appreciated that two of my fellow poets requested it between their own poems! I certainly wasn't expecting sansula commissions on the spot!

The Myth of the Grasses
The myth of the Grasses
I've recorded the first three verses of the Seventeen Myths; The Myth of the Poet, The Myth of the Poem (Part I) and The Myth of the Poem (Part II). You can listen to those here, and if you enjoy it, please consider a donation to Tiratanaloka [Un]limited, which would be a generous and wonderful gift indeed! Thank you! Xx

Opening Hearts at Open Mic!

12/5/2024

There are a few aspirations in the pipeline for the Earth Heart space, glamping, day retreats, healing and community events to name a few. As creative people though, one thing we really couldn't exclude is the arts. Visual arts, music and all kinds of performance would be equally welcome; but that's a bit of a way off just now. Still, that doesn't stop us finding ways and means to exercise our expressive sides in the short term and we've recently discovered a lovely little open mic night not very far away.
Sitar
On the second Friday of the month, at the community hub The Cross Keys in Llanfyllin, Arts Connection hosts an evening which welcomes music and spoken word. That works very well indeed for Nik and my respective art forms but we've also been working creatively together on bringing his sitar skills into relation with some of the Buddhist chants that I use in my meditative and devotional practice. So, last Friday, we gave our first little piece a public debut! We've called it Perfection of Wisdom Sound Journey and it weaves together the Sunyata and Prajnaparamita mantra, bringing in the Heart Sutra too, which is a perfection of wisdom text.
On the evening, I also shared a couple of poems and Nik treated the room to a condensed version of the Nat Bhairav raag; evocative of heroic exuberance and lost love. Hindustani classical pieces are often much longer than your average open mic contribution, so arranging an abridged interpretation was no mean feat!
I've lost count of the number of open mic nights I've been to over the years, as a poet and spoken word artist, as a curious music lover, as a support to a performing friend, or a combination of all the above, but I struggle to recall a night that combined as much genuine talent with such welcoming and warm accessibility. While there's been no shortage of accomplished performance on the nights we've attended, there's also a very genuine open atmosphere that encourages wide participation. There's no stage as such, with audience and performers alike forming a circle, taking turns to share, applaud or sing along as appropriate! Facilitation is minimal and the air of co-creation is both palpable and inspiring.
I'm sure we'll be back in June, and I might even remember to take a photograph or two! In the meantime, here's the piece we shared, roughly recorded as a bit of a sketch but enough to give you an idea! If you're local, I'd highly recommend a visit; you don't have to be a performer, though there'd be space for you if you are, and you'd be made very welcome either way!

Hope to see you there!

Glittermouse Joins Dragons Craft Collective

Dragons Window
Dragons Craft Collective has recently welcomed a new local crafter to their diverse and eclectic display shelves.
Glittermouse (a multidisciplinary arts project of Annabeth Orton) has been producing and selling upcycled crafts since 1995 at fairs, shops and craft markets across the UK but you can now find a selection of her painted, re-used glass and tin pieces at the Dragons shop in Llanrhaeader-Ym-Mochnant. As an equally experienced writer, she also has two collections of poetry available for sale as well as a range of poetic handmade greetings cards.
She told us “having only just moved to Llanrhaeader in January, I was of course instantly drawn to the Dragons shop and soon discovered the exciting plethora of locally produced crafts with delight!"
"How could I possibly not ask to become involved in such a high-quality platform for local artisans? It’s been a real joy to get to know some of my fellow local artists and makers, as well as a few more new neighbours as they come in to make use of the excellent range of eco products and refills that Dragons also stock. I’ve always found artists collectives an inspiring way of challenging myself to develop new creative projects and I’m looking forward to see what will unfold now I’m a part of Dragons Craft Collective. That their ethos of sustainability fits so well with my own commitment to using reused and recycled materials where possible is simply an added incentive to see how I can become increasingly ethical in my crafting.”

Annabeth will be volunteering on a weekly basis in the shop, but you can find her crafts, as well as a wide selection of other beautiful pieces, at any time in the Dragons shop which is open Fridays 12:00 -16:00, Saturdays 10:00 - 17:00 and Sundays 11:00 - 17:00 for an excellent source of unique, high quality gifts and treats, whatever the occasion!
